Is it illegal to redirect someone else's letters without their consent?

Answer:
We were getting mail that said our address but someone else's name. Turned out the address was similar to ours and I just phoned up Royal mail, told them where this person actually lived and they redirected the mail to the correct address. We gave all the letters we had received to the postman.
YES!!!
It is called interfering with the mail!

However, once they have dropped through your letterbox, you can re-post the letters with a new address written on it, if they have moved. Otherwise, contact them and ask them to redirect the mail - and it costs!!!
It's a federal offense to tamper with the US mail, So yes.
Oh yes and anything involving the mail or mail box considered tampering, is a federal offense. Why would you do such a act?
Yes, they can get fined loadsn or possible community service.
I cant see what is illegal about it, If I don't know the previous owners address, I either write on the envelope 'return to sender' Or 'Not this address' let the postal service sort it!
Whats the alternative collect them all up and save them, or just bin them?
Don't know, but if a letter comes here for someone we don't know, we just put ' Not Known ' %26 put it back in the post, if we know where the person lives, I put the address on it, put it back in the post.
