Is it legal (and fair!?) to randomly select people for interview when they have applied to a post?

I have just been turned down for my "Perfect" career simply because they had too many people to interview and I wasn't randomly selected to be interviewed. It is absolutely gutting, I actually stood a chance at a job I would have loved, been good at and spent absolutely ages on the application. How can they possibly know they have the best person for the job when they didn't even interview all the possible people????
Answer:
Hi Zulu,

In the UK, it is perfectly legal but very stupid. The selection process needs to be done correctly and thoroughly. Selecting candidates for interview at random is certainly not the way to do it.

You should consider that if this is the way they recruit then perhaps it is not the type of organisation you would want to work for if the best candidate is unlikely to be the person who gets the job.

Good luck.
That's life.

Employers can do what they like regarding selecting people for interview - they are not answerable to you.

Whether it is fair or not - it happens - being unfair is not illegal.
In the UK i don't think it is. If you match the person spec. and can demonstrate that (on the application form) then you should get an interview. I think that's right.
In the US as long as the interviewees were chosen randomly, the employer did no wrong. You do not have a right to an interview. If interviewees were chosen on the basis of a protected class (race, disability, etc.) then you have a case that is almost impossible to prove.

Do something to set yourself apart from the other candidates and get the employer's attention!
i know how you feel i to have had the same done to me, ive known firms that will bin all applicants who's names begin with, the letter H and C, but as long as its ran-dam its fair, they cant look at 2000 application's its just not going to work
It can be unfair to all of those who applied for the position, but the company can choose who they want to interviiew, and there is nothing you can do about it.
Sorry Zulu but the problem is that there are too many unemployed and not enough jobs it is the same all over the world.
